Iona Lane

A very calm, incident free night of music and stories from singer and guitarist Iona Lane.

She joined us on the release day of her new 4 track EP, Bring The Tide In which is available from her Bandcamp page here. (In fact she walked into the village to post several copies of it just before the concert).

Iona was born in Lancaster, studied in Leeds (under Stuart McCallum) and now lives in Glasgow.

Her songs are full of refences to place, mountains, the environment. But as she introduced each tune it was clear that there were people woven into these places that were just as important. She shared stories of her childhood and how her parents dragged her up mountains and hills against her will, but how she now loves to go back (and often finds them much smaller than she remembers!).

No amplification at all. Iona’s warm, soft voice and subtle guitar were sometimes joined by the surprisingly lush sound of the shruti box. The quietness drew the audience in to the places and people of the songs as we moved from the Isle of Rum, to Suilven in Assynt or the hills of Yorkshire.

The dramatic Suilven, featured on Iona’s new EP.

The the lovely, hand written set list.

We had another capacity audience who enjoyed the Thai red curry and jasmine rice cooked by Steve and delicious brownies made by Alison. We really are spoilt by the incredible generosity of our talented cooks.

Just when we thought the evening was drawing to a close, Simon appeared with his phone. He had his Dad, Roger, on the line….all the way from Australia, where he now lives. It was his 90th birthday so we all sang him Happy Birthday before discovering where Simon’s penchant for Ronnie Corbett-esque stories comes from! It was a lovely end to a delightful night.
